Deities

Incan gods and goddesses represented a number of shifting and overlapping divine powers. The Incas worshiped a pantheon of nature gods and goddesses. The most important were: Viracocha, Inti, Illapa, Pachamama, Mamacocha, and Mamaquilla. Inti and Viracocha was considered to be omnipotent and the highest gods.

Viracocha : In Inca mythology Viracocha was the creator of universe. He was one of the most important deities in the Inca pantheon. There are many legends on Viracocha. One legend says Inti was his son and Mama Quilla and Pachamaam were his daughters. According to this legend he created a great flood and destroyed the people around Lake Titicaca. He saved only Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo so that they can bring civilization to the world. Afterward Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo founded the Inca civilization.

Inti: Inti was the Sun God. Inca believed he was the son of Viracocha. All Inca Emperors were said to descend from this god. Inti is represented throughout Inca culture by the golden sun disk. Inca legend says Inti taught Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo the art of civilization and then he sent them to earth so that they can bring civilization to earth. One legend says Manco Capac was his son, though it is a bit confusing as in another legend Manco Capac was stated as son of Viracocha.

Illapa: Illapa was the thunder god. This was the god the Inca worshiped for rain.

Pachacamama: Pachacamama was the Goddes of the earth.

Mamacocha: Mamacocha was the Goddes of the sea.

Mamaquilla: Mamaquilla was the Goddes of the moon, goddess of marriage and the protector of women. She was the wife of Inti and the daughter of Viracocha.

Other gods the Incas worshipped include:
Konira Wirakocha- This is the trickster god. He wanders around dressed as an impoverished traveler. With a single word he could create fields and terraced hillsides.

Supai- Supai was the god of death and greed. Supai was greatly feared by the Inca and many children were sacrificed in order to appease him.

Manco Capac- The son of Inti. Manco Capac founded the city of Cuzco and was worshipped as the son of the Sun.
